Join Us
The Institute for Nothing offers various opportunities for researchers, students, and academic visitors interested in exploring the frontiers of nothingness studies. We welcome individuals from diverse disciplinary backgrounds who share our commitment to understanding the theoretical foundations and practical applications of absence.
Research Positions
Permanent Research Faculty
The Institute periodically recruits permanent research faculty in our core research areas:
- Computational Absence Theory
- Zero-Value Economics
- Empty Set Mathematics
- Null Physics
- Philosophy of Nothing
These positions involve leading research initiatives, mentoring junior researchers, and contributing to the Institute’s interdisciplinary collaborations.
Postdoctoral Researchers
Our postdoctoral program offers early-career researchers the opportunity to develop their research agenda within the supportive environment of the Institute. Postdoctoral positions are typically 2-3 years in duration and include funding for research activities, conference travel, and publication costs.
Fellowship Programs
Senior Research Fellowships
Experienced researchers with established records in fields related to nothingness studies can apply for Senior Research Fellowships. These 1-2 year positions allow scholars to pursue ambitious research projects while collaborating with Institute faculty.
Junior Research Fellowships
Early-career scholars who have recently completed their doctoral studies can apply for Junior Research Fellowships. These 1-year positions (renewable for a second year) provide mentorship and resources for developing innovative research in nothingness studies.
Interdisciplinary Fellowships
Designed for researchers whose work crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries, these fellowships support innovative projects that connect multiple aspects of nothingness studies. Interdisciplinary Fellows work closely with researchers from different departments to develop new methodological and theoretical approaches.
Visiting Programs
Visiting Scholars Program
The Institute welcomes established researchers for short-term visits (1-6 months) to collaborate with our faculty, participate in seminars, and contribute to our intellectual community. Visiting Scholars receive office space, access to all Institute facilities, and opportunities to present their work.
Academic Visitors
Researchers and faculty members from other institutions can apply to visit the Institute for shorter periods (1-4 weeks) to participate in specific research activities, attend events, or develop collaborative projects with Institute researchers.
Current Opportunities
Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Absence Theory
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join Dr. Toru Hikimasu's team working on BlockvØid technology and void compression algorithms. The successful candidate will have expertise in distributed systems, data structures, and computational theory.
Senior Research Fellowship in Zero-Value Economics
The Institute invites applications for a Senior Research Fellowship focusing on zero-value economic systems and their applications in financial stability frameworks. The fellowship provides resources for an ambitious research project exploring how zero-value assets can function as economic stabilizers.
Visiting Scholars Program (Fall 2025)
Applications are now open for our Fall 2025 Visiting Scholars Program. We welcome researchers from any discipline with projects related to the theoretical or practical aspects of nothingness. Visiting Scholars receive office space, accommodation, and integration into the Institute's research community.
Support for Researchers
The Institute for Nothing provides comprehensive support for all members of our research community:
- Academic Resources: Access to our specialized library collections, digital repositories, and research databases
- Research Funding: Internal grants for research activities, conference travel, and publication costs
- Technical Support: Specialized assistance for computational, mathematical, and experimental research
- Collaborative Environment: Regular seminars, workshops, and informal gatherings to foster interdisciplinary connections
- Professional Development: Mentorship programs and career advancement support for early-career researchers
- Housing Assistance: On-campus accommodation for visiting researchers and support for permanent faculty relocation
Living at the Institute
Our campus in the Nullarbor Plain offers a unique environment for focused research and contemplation. The remote location provides an ideal setting for exploring concepts of absence and emptiness, while our modern facilities ensure a comfortable living and working experience.
On-campus and nearby housing options are available for researchers at all levels, from short-term visitors to permanent faculty. Our community services team can assist with relocation planning, transportation arrangements, and orientation to life at the Institute.
